Guests of the city begin their acquaintance with St. Petersburg from the historical centre of the city - a classical ensemble of palaces, monuments, drawbridges. Here you can find architectural monuments from the Petrine baroque to the northern modern. One of the visiting cards of the city is the former palace of the Russian emperors, the Hermitage Museum. It is included in the "major league" of the world's museum treasures. There are three million exhibits in its collection, and the magnificent collection, started by Catherine the Great, is replenished to this day. Hermitage masterpieces attract tourists from all over the world. The Hermitage presents historical and artistic monuments of East and West, from the Paleolithic era to the present day, reflecting the cultural heritage of many nations. The Hermitage museum is the oldest and most famous museum of foreign art in Russia in its significance is on the same level with the most famous museums in the world, such as the Louvre, the Metropolitan, the British Museum. Connoisseurs of the heritage of Russian culture can visit the Russian Museum, the world's largest collection of Russian art, from ancient icons to works by contemporary artists.
In the suburbs of St. Petersburg, there are many imperial palace and park ensembles - Peterhof, Tsarskoe Selo, Pavlovsk, Gatchina. These parks are the most valuable decoration of the city, picturesquely surrounding it like a pearl necklace. The fountains of Peterhof are the brightest symbol of St. Petersburg. On the territory of the Peterhof ensemble there are over 170 fountains and water cascades, equipped during the reign of Peter the Great. The famous art and architectural palace and park museum-reserve "Gatchina" attracts many tourists and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Pavlovsk State Museum-Reserve contains a unique monument of landscape art of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The former imperial residence was named after the Russian emperor Paul I, his mother Catherine II visited this place very often to hunt on the surrounding territory. However, one of the favourite residences of the Romanov dynasty is the famous palace complex of Tsarskoe Selo. The famous Tsarskoe Selo Lyceum is located on its territory. Now it is a museum, but the spirit of the lyceum brotherhood, which Alexander Pushkin wrote about, still remains within its walls. Tsarskoe Selo is officially considered a part of the historical centre of St. Petersburg and is protected by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site.
Another unique cultural monument is located in Tsarskoe Selo is the Amber Room - one of the most famous interiors in the world. Many people dream to see it and even call it the eighth wonder of the world. The appearance of the Amber Room is covered with legends and myths. In 2023, the Amber Room is celebrating its 20th anniversary since being rebuilt after its mysterious disappearance during World War II. The amber panels of the famous room are a true masterpiece of jewellery art. Restorers and architects recreated mosaic panels with amazingly beautiful ornaments in the form of monograms, bas-reliefs, coats of arms, flower garlands made from pieces of solar stone of different shades - from lemon to ruby.
