BRUSSELS, 12th December, 2024 (WAM) -- European Union member states have decided to lift checks on individuals at internal land borders with and between Bulgaria and Romania, starting 1st January 2025.
Since joining the European Union, Bulgaria and Romania have implemented parts of the Schengen legal framework, known as the Schengen acquis, including regulations on external border control, police cooperation, and the use of the Schengen Information System.
On 30th December 2023, the EU Council adopted a decision to apply the remaining parts of the Schengen acquis from 31st March 2024, and to lift checks on individuals at internal air and sea borders.
Schengen is the largest open-travel area in the world, now encompassing 29 countries - 25 out of the 27 EU member states, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland - covering a total population of 420 million.
Internal border controls have yet to be lifted with Cyprus and Ireland, which are not part of the Schengen Area.
