KATHMANDU, Nepal - Nepal says it is closely monitoring the recent Taiwan issue and remains committed to the one-China policy.
Sewa Lamsal, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, stated at a press conference in Kathmandu on Friday, "Nepal is in favor of international peace."
The government's statement comes two days after the Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Hou Yanqi, expressed confidence in Nepal's support in the face of rising tensions with the U.S. over the Taiwan issue.
Lamsal, on the other hand, did not say anything negative about the U.S. during the press conference.
Meanwhile, the official stated that Nepal and China might sign some agreements during Foreign Affairs Minister Narayan Khadka's visit to Beijing next week.
"However, I cannot make the details public now. We will hold another press conference for this," she said.
"Please be patient."
China has asked Nepal to oppose Taiwan's independence, as the issue has recently gained prominence in global politics with the high-profile visit of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the China-controlled country.
The Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Hou Yanqi, issued a statement expecting Nepal's support the day after Pelosi arrived in Taiwan.
