SHAN STATE, Myanmar - At least one person has been killed in a series of attacks in Muse, northern Shan State since a Chinese-owned casino was raided last Sunday.
Residents of the town, which lies on Myanmar's border with China, said the victim was a 27-year-old woman who died on Monday afternoon when two men on motorcycles threw grenades at a traffic intersection near the central market.
According to sources, five other people were injured, including two traffic cops and three members of a military-backed militia.
Later that day, around 9:30 p.m., two explosions were reported at the Mingalar Muse commercial complex, which houses the casino. There were no injuries reported.
A shootout occurred at the town's central police station around the same time, according to a Muse resident who asked not to be identified.
"Not long after the explosions at Mingalar Muse, there was some gunfire at the police station."
"I don't believe anyone was hurt," the source said, adding that the shooting lasted about 30 minutes.
On Tuesday, two men were shot in their car while stopped at a busy intersection. According to sources, the unknown assailants were in the vehicle behind them.
Both men who were shot were taken to the hospital, but their conditions were unknown at the reporting time.
It was unclear who was behind the attacks, but residents said criminal activity has increased in the town since the military took over last year.
According to the source, mafias are attempting to gain control of illegal activities.
